The approach is: “All sums are easy, show me a difficult one”. The learner indicates where he / she has a problem, the tutor then teaches that specific course material. The tutor knows what background knowledge lacks and can fill in the gaps.
Cost
Learners that come regularly every week pre-pay for the term. Problems can be addressed as they occur and be pre-empted. The tutor can build up classes of four to eight learners, where they learn from each other’s problems. Half an hour a week costs R4000 per term, even if the lesson sometimes runs slightly over time. This is usually enough to revise the work covered at school during the week.

Mentoring develops the mentee to overcome psycho-social barriers. It is not focused on course material. A mentoring target can be career success. Targets do not have to be academic. An academic target could be to develop the mentee from borderline into top performing in all subjects. Mentorship addresses the fundamental reasons a mentee does not perform. See Mentoring offered by Prof Kruger. Mentoring mostly happens during off peak times. Often the reason mentees do not perform is that they acquired wrong habits. We can only take a few mentees.
